Edgar Prado
- Born January 12, 1967 in Lima, Peru.
- Won the 2006 Kentucky Derby aboard Barbaro. The colt went on to the Preakness, where he would break down and would later pass away from laminitis. Prado chronicled his journey with Barbaro in the book, “My Guy Barbaro,” which he released in spring 2008.
- Prado has won the Belmont Stakes twice with Sarava in 2002 and Birdstone in 2004.
- In 2003, Prado won the Kentucky Oaks on Bird Town.
- 2006 marked a monumental year for Prado. He won the Eclipse and ESPY for Outstanding Jockey and NYRA’s Mike Venezia Award for “extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship.”
- Inducted in racing’s Hall of Fame in 2008.
- Prado’s is one of eleven siblings, and has a family actively involved in the racing world. His father was a trainer in his native Peru. Brother Jorge was a jockey before turning to training in Maryland and then brother Anibal rides at Philadelphia Park.
- Prado began riding in Peru in 1983 after attending the jockey school there and in 1986 brought his tack with him to North America, and was contract rider for Manny Azpurua in Florida.
- Moved his tack to Maryland and dominated the circuit until being offered the chance to ride first call in 1999 for trainer John Kimmel in New York.
- Won 6,000th career race on February 20, 2008 at Gulfstream Park aboard Sumphin. Only 19 other jockeys have accomplished this feat.
- Top mounts for Prado have included: Game Face, Folklore, Round Pond, Giant Moon, Saint Liam, Galloping Gal, Bayou’s Lassie, and Alannan.
