Pedigree

Bred for speed top and bottom, J P’s Gusto doesn't have a favorable pedigree for the 1 1/4-mile Derby distance

J P's Gusto was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm

Sire Successful Appeal made a name for himself in the sprints ranks in 1998-2000, winning five graded events at distances up to a mile, including the A.G. Vanderbilt (G2), Kentucky Cup Spring (G2) and Amsterdam (G3) at six furlongs; he’s by Valid Appeal, who is best known for passing speed but also counts many successful routers to his credit; Successful Appeal receives plenty of speed from his dam, the Fortunate Prospect mare Successful Dancer, who is also the dam of Canadian Grade 2-winning sprinter True to Tradition

Successful Appeal has been represented by many sprinters at stud, but his son Closing Argument finished second in the 2005 Kentucky Derby and he’s also responsible for Grade 2 hero Successful Dan, who finished first in the 2010 Clark H. (G1) before being disqualified to second and is being pointed toward the Stephen Foster (G1) this summer

Successful Appeal is also the sire of Derby contender Twice the Appeal

J P’s Gusto’s dam, the multiple stakes-winning Caller I.D. mare Call Her Magic, was a confirmed sprinter, making all 14 career starts at six furlongs or less, and she’s also the dam of the stakes-placed runners Magic Appeal and Kid Majic, who both preferred shorter distances; the 15-year-old mare is a half-sister to the dam of champion Proud Spell, who captured the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and 1 ¼-mile Alabama S. (G1) in 2008

Broodmare sire Caller I.D., an ultra-quick son of top sprint sire Phone Trick, provides little encouragement for a Derby hopeful; his best runner as a broodmare sire, Grade 2 winner Battle Won, was all speed

Successful Appeal can’t be dismissed as a Kentucky Derby sire if combined with the right mare, but J P’s Gusto hails from a speed-oriented female family and will outrun his breeding if successful at 1 ¼ miles
