Pedigree
- By the undefeated Candy Ride (Arg), a champion miler in Argentina
- In his only start at 1 1/4 miles, Candy Ride blazed to a track record-setting victory in the Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar • Has sired three Grade 1 winners from his first crop -- Misremembered, winner of the March 6 Santa Anita H. (G1) at 1 1/4 miles, as well as the top-class sprinters Capt. Candyman Can and Evita Argentina
- Another prominent runner is Grade 3 victor Chocolate Candy, who was runner-up in last year’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) and fifth in the Kentucky Derby (G1)
- Sidney’s Candy is out of Fair Exchange, a daughter of supersire Storm Cat
- A Grade 1 winner who just missed in the 1985 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Storm Cat is chiefly associated with high-class speed, but is capable of siring horses with significant stamina from the right mares
- Examples include European champion Giant’s Causeway; Preakness S. (G1) and Belmont S. (G1) winner Tabasco Cat; Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) hero Cat Thief, third in the 1999 Derby; and Haskell Invitational (G1) romper Bluegrass Cat, runner-up in the 2006 Derby, Belmont S. (G1) and Travers S. (G1)
- Storm Cat’s daughters have produced speedy types like champion sprinter Speightstown; the outstanding juveniles Folklore, Sky Mesa and Jump Start; and such accomplished routers as Nobiz Like Shobiz, Buddha, Sunday Break (Jpn) and Magnificent Song
- Fair Exchange’s dam, multiple Grade 1 queen Exchange, earned more than $1.2 million
- Exchange scored major victories on both dirt and turf, including the 1 1/4-mile Santa Barbara H. (G1) and the 1 1/2-mile Orchid H. (G2)
- Further back in the female line, this is the family of Canadian champions Steady Growth and Kingsbridge, both proven at longer distances
- Although Candy Ride may be emerging as a high-class speed influence, Sidney’s Candy is eligible to inherit enough added stamina from his granddam Exchange to last the Derby trip, but it’s a judgment call
