• Born April 1, 1979 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. • Afleet Alex gave Rose wins in the 2005 Preakness and Belmont Stakes and a third in the Kentucky Derby. • Was a champion wrestler in high school, and was recruited by top colleges. • In 1998 decided that he wanted to become a jockey after attending the races with a family friend at Penn National. • Learned to gallop and ride in Puerto Rico breaking yearlings and two-year-olds. Came back to the United States nine months later and went to work for trainer Mike Petro in 1999. • Took out his jockey’s license in September 2000 and won his first race on September 23 aboard Daly’s Princess for Petro at Delaware Park. • In 2001 won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. • Rose won riding titles at Delaware Park in 2001 and 2007, and would take the riding title at Oaklawn Park in 2005. • Took the ESPY Award in 2005 for top jockey. • Top mounts include: Bullsbay, Smart Enough, Caprice, Blind Date, and Miraculous Miss.

California Chrome Cruises to Victory in 140th Kentucky Derby before Crowd of 164,906

Steven Coburn and Perry Martin's favored California Chrome, ridden by Victor Espinoza, took command at the head of the stretch en route to a 1 3/4-length victory over Commanding Curve to win the 140th running of the $2,202,800 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I). A sun-splashed crowd of 164,906, the second-largest attendance in Kentucky Derby history, watched California Chrome give jockey Victor Espinoza a second Derby victory to go with his triumph on War Emblem in 2002.
