Patrick gained national prominence in 1997 by guiding Favorite Trick to an undefeated season culminating with a record setting win in the Breeders Cup Juvenile earning him an Eclipse Award for Two year old Champion as well as Horse of the Year Honors, the first time the prestigous award had been given to a juvenile since Secretariat in 1972. He conditioned Eclipse Champion and Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Countess Diana in the same year. Taking a private job with Frank Stronach in 1998 he choreographed an undefeated year for Awesome Again ending with a win in the Breeders Cup Classic at Churchill Downs. Patrick is a fifth generation horseman of Irish descent who left school at the age of fifteen to become an apprentice jockey in England, Ireland and France. He came to the states in 1978 to work for the famed Phipps stable under the direction of trainer John Russell. He worked for trainers Leroy Jolley and Howie Tesher before taking out his own license in 1985. His first graded stakes win came in the G-3 Tremont at Belmont Park with Mr. Sea Sanders in 1988. At the 1997 Churchill Downs spring meet he set a then record of saddling 9 consecutive winners and finishing the meet with a record of 17-14 with the three losses seeing second place efforts. Other top runners include Golden Missile, Touch Gold, Magan Graduate, Duckhorn, Pass Ruch, Nani Rose, Bella Chiarra,Relaxing Rhythm and Ethan Man.
Chuck & Maribeth Sandford LLC
Chuck and Maribeth Sandford reside in Marengo Ilinois a suburb of Chicago and own Bag Makers Inc. a leading supplier of non woven paper and plastic bags. Maribeth founded the company in a dairy barn in 1980 and it now employs over 800 people worldwide and imprints over 80 million custom bags yearly to the corporate marketplace. The couple were featured in the rags to riches themed CNBC show' "How I Made My Millions" in 2011. From a small company to a multi millon dollar operation the company is family owned and operated with Maribeth and Chuck at the helm. Maribeth grew up in Louisville and Chuck has had a long time passion for horseracing so they ventured into the thoroughbred business in 2009. Putting together a small but select stable with purchases from the yearling and two year old in training sales, Chuck said after purchasing a sales topiing Tiznow colt, " to get into it at this level is just like a dream come true. It's a terrific industry."
