John Fort caught the racing bug as a teeneager in South Carolina while watching Hall of Fame trainers Max Hirsh and Wood Stephens at a nearby training center. A top ranked polo player, Fort began Peachtree Stable in 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia as a racing partnership to buy, race and sell high level horses. Peachtree had their biggest win in the 2011 G -1 Kentucky Oaks with Plum Pretty. The stable nearly captured the 2001 Kentucky Derby when Invisible Ink finished second just behind Monarchos. Other stakes winners that have won in the Peachtree silks include Mythical Power, Bonnie Blue Flag, High Cotton, Flashpoint, Wild Horses and Red Giant.
Empire Maker--Jelani, by Smarty Jones
Artemis is by multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Empire Maker, who never ran worse than third in eight races, capturing the Belmont Stakes, Wood Memorial and Florida Derby, all Grade 1s.
The stallion is a son of Toussaud, a Grade 1 queen herself who produced three other Grade 1 winners and was honored as Broodmare of the Year in 2002.
Empire Maker has been just as, if not more, successful in the breeding shed as his dam, siring the likes of dual Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner and three-time Eclipse champion Royal Delta; Grade 1 scorers Pioneerof the Nile, Bodemeister and Grace Hall; and four of the last five heroines of the Spinster in Emollient, In Lingerie, Acoma and Mushka.
Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister both placed in the Kentucky Derby while Grace Hall ran third in the 2012 Kentucky Oaks.
Artemis is out of the unraced Smarty Jones mare Jelani, who is herself a daughter of Grade 1 queen La Gueriere.
La Gueriere is also the dam of Grade 1 heroine Icon Project, a three-quarter sister to Artemis being by Empire Maker; Grade 2 scorer Lasting Approval; and the unraced La Comete, who would herself produce full Speightstown siblings in multiple Grade 2 star Munnings and Grade 2-placed multiple stakes queen Munnings Sister.
Artemis’ fourth dam is Priceless Gem, who is noted for foaling French Horse of the Year and four-time champion Allez France.
