Mahmood Al Zarooni
Mahmood was appointed as trainer to the powerful Godolphin Team in March of 2010 and quickly stamped himself as a top conditioner when he won the Godolphin Mile on the Dubai World Cup program with Calming Influence, his first runner. In a short period he has added classic wins by Blue Bunting in the 1000 Guineas and Darley Irish Oaks, as well as high profile victories in the Prince of Wales and Dubai Sheema Classic with Rewindling. 2012 kicked off in the highest fashion for Al Zarooni by capturing the Dubai World Cup with Monterosso for Godolphin. Prior to becoming one of the head trainers for Godolphin he served as assistant to their head conditioner, Saeed bin Suroor.
Godolphin is a global racing operation founded by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, prime minister and ruler of Dubai. In 1996 he founded the Dubai World Cup which currently ranks as the world's richest race. Godolphin has won the Dubai World Cup five times including a win by Horse of the Year Invasor who captured the Breeders Cup Classic as well. They were named Eclipse champion owner in 2009 and consistently are among the top stables throughout Europe. Other top runners include Belmont Stakes winner Jazil, Daylami, Dubai Millenium, Street Cry, Fantastic Light, Tempera, Regal Ransom and Discreet Cat. Sheikh Mohammed also races under the Darley Stable banner.
Artigiano is bred to relish 1 1/4 miles on dirt, should his connections decide to aim for Churchill Downs.
Sire Distorted Humor was a classy runner whose optimal trip was seven furlongs to a mile, but he has far surpassed those limitations as a stallion. He became an immediate hit by siring 2003 Derby-winning champion Funny Cide in his first crop. The list of his star progeny has yet to cease -- 2005 Travers hero Flower Alley (the sire of I'll Have Another); Drosselmeyer, winner of the 2010 Belmont and 2011 Breeders' Cup Classic; and $2 million-earners Hystericalady and Commentator.
Artigiano's dam, Angel Craft, won twice on turf. She is a daughter of Hall of Famer A.P. Indy, hero of the 1992 Belmont and Breeders' Cup Classic, and a supersire. His influence on the breed will endure through such sons as Pulpit, Bernardini, Mineshaft. Aside from establishing his own sire line, A.P. Indy ranks as a potent broodmare sire, with his daughters producing two-time champion Royal Delta and 2010 Derby star Super Saver.
Distorted Humor has crossed well with A.P. Indy mares, resulting in the likes of Any Given Saturday and current Derby hopeful Fortify (a stablemate of Artigiano).
Angel Craft's dam, Monaassabaat, captured a 1 1/4-mile stakes in England and has foaled three stakes performers. She hails from a rich family strewn with quality. Artigiano's third dam is It's in the Air, the champion two-year-old filly of 1978 and ancestress of Storming Home, Musical Chimes and Music Note.
