Reade Baker

Born in Port Dalhousie, Ontario on April 30, 1947. Has made only one start in the Triple Crown series with Kentucky Bear in the 2006 Preakness Stakes with a sixth place finish. Trained Fatal Bullet to a second place finish in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and would later go on to win the Sovereign Award for Canada’s Top Sprinter and Horse of the Year. Fatal Bullet in 2009 won the Grade I Phoenix at Keeneland and would later run sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Baker has made the top ten trainers list at Woodbine in the last six years. Got his first taste of horse racing from his Uncle Charles, who took him to the races at Fort Erie when he was 14. It was that day at the races he knew he wanted to work in horse racing. When he started skipping school for the races, Baker was sent to boarding school. At the age of 18, Baker returned to the track and went to work for trainer Pete McCann as a groom. Baker later went on to work for Gil Rountree and Conn Smythe. In 1976 Baker went to work as jockey agent for Gary Stahlbaum for six years. In 1989 Baker took out his trainer’s license and won his first race in June at Woodbine. In his past time Baker enjoys a successful hobby of showing birds, especially chickens and ducks.
