Alex Solis


A native of Panama City, Panama, Solis attended a jockey school in his homeland and won his first race there in 1981. After arriving in the United States, Solis won the 1986 Preakness Stakes aboard Snow Chief; and aboard Pleasantly Perfect he won the Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). He has also won the Breeders' Cup Sprint and Truf.  Solis finished second in the Kentucky Derby three times -- aboard Captain Bodgit in 1997, Victory Gallop in 1998 and Aptitude in 2000.

Team Valor International earned their first Kentucky Derby victory in 2011 with homebred Animal Kingdom who would go on to finish second in the Preakness Stakes. Team Valor International is a syndicate race horse ownership group under the leadership of Barry Irwin. They have started 4 horses in the Kentucky Derby, prior to Animal Kingdom's win, their top finisher was Captain Bodgit who ran second in 1997. Other Team Valor stars include The Deputy, Star of Cozzene, Gitano Hernando, Cashier’s Dream, Unbridled Belle, Pluck, Daveron, Summer Soiree and Visionaire.

California Chrome Cruises to Victory in 140th Kentucky Derby before Crowd of 164,906

Steven Coburn and Perry Martin's favored California Chrome, ridden by Victor Espinoza, took command at the head of the stretch en route to a 1 3/4-length victory over Commanding Curve to win the 140th running of the $2,202,800 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I). A sun-splashed crowd of 164,906, the second-largest attendance in Kentucky Derby history, watched California Chrome give jockey Victor Espinoza a second Derby victory to go with his triumph on War Emblem in 2002.

California Chrome is attempting to become only the fourth California-bred, Kentucky Derby winner in history and the first since Decidedly in 1962.
