Doug O'Neill began training in 1994 and has been a perennial leader on the southern California racing circuit. In 2012 he rose to the highest level of the sport by saddling I'll Have Another to win the 138th Kentucky Derby and he would also go on to capture the Preakness stakes but was retired before a run for the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes. Prior to his success with I'll Have Another, Doug was recognized for his campaigning of the popular gelding Lava Man who he claimed for $50,000 and would go on to win over $5 million including grade 1 races on three different surfaces while capturing the hearts and interest of fans around the world. Lava Man is now the stable pony for Team O'Neill and escorted I'll Have Another to the post of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victories. He has saddled the winners of three Breeders Cup races and trained three Eclipse champions. Other top stable stars include He's Had Enough, Goldencents, Know More, Handsome Mike, Stevie Wonderboy, Thor's Echo, Square Eddie, Maryfield, Great Hunter and Notional. He credits his brother Dennis, stable manager and bloodstock agent, for helping with his success.
