Gary & Mary West

Gary and Mary West purchased their first horses in 1980 and have seen their stable expand to a current number of over 54 in training and more than 18 mares at Dell Ridge Farm in Kentucky. In 1993 their Rockumondo upset the Arkansas Derby at huge odds. Eventual millionaire Dollar Bill competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown in 2012 with his best finish a 4th place effort in the Preakness. In 2002 Buddha won the G-1 Wood Memorial and was the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby before an injury sent him to retirement prior to race day. Other top horses include Power Broker, Casino Host, Flashy Gal and Mass Media. Their stable has been managed by long time assoiciate and bloodstock advisor Ben Glass jr. Gary began in hospital administration before building one of the largets telecommunications companies in the world. Gary and Mary West Foundation is their philanthropy which was created to change the way health care is delivered.

California Chrome Cruises to Victory in 140th Kentucky Derby before Crowd of 164,906

Steven Coburn and Perry Martin's favored California Chrome, ridden by Victor Espinoza, took command at the head of the stretch en route to a 1 3/4-length victory over Commanding Curve to win the 140th running of the $2,202,800 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I). A sun-splashed crowd of 164,906, the second-largest attendance in Kentucky Derby history, watched California Chrome give jockey Victor Espinoza a second Derby victory to go with his triumph on War Emblem in 2002.
