Derby Contenders

Wertheimer and Frere

Owned by brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer. The brothers are part of the French family that owns the national recognized Chanel perfume business that also sells clothing and accessories. Family began in horse racing starting off with Grandfather Pierre. In 1956 he would take his first English classic of many for the family by winning the Epsom Derby with Lavadin. Alain and Gerard’s father Jacques would take over the racing business in 1975 and went on to be named leading owner in France for that same year.

The family’s silks have been carried to victory in the Breeders’ Cup four times. 2008 and 2009 saw Goldikova win the Mile, in 2003 Halfbridled won the Juvenile Fillies, and Kotashaan in 1993 won the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The brothers employ trainer Todd Pletcher and Richard Mandella in the United States and Freddie Head in Europe.
