Medaglia d'Oro--Sunshine Song, by War Chant
If Den's Legacy should prove capable at 1 1/4 miles, it will likely occur on turf or synthetic rather than dirt. Aside from his past performances, another indicator is his pedigree: he is a close relative of turf miler C. S. Silk.
Both are by Medaglia d'Oro, who won the 2002 Travers at the classic distance and missed narrowly in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes. Later an outstanding older horse, he garnered such prestigious events as the Whitney and Donn Handicaps. He was also twice runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Medaglia d'Oro's first crop was sensational, headlined by Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, who defeated males in the 2009 Preakness, Haskell and Woodward, and crushed the Kentucky Oaks by a record margin. Best known as a filly sire, he had another Kentucky Oaks winner in Plum Pretty (2011), along with top fillies Champagne d'Oro, Gabby's Golden Gal and turf star Marketing Mix. His only U.S. Grade 1-winning sons are Carter hero Warrior's Reward and current Derby contender Violence.
Den's Legacy is out of the unraced Sunshine Song, a War Chant mare. War Chant started out on the 2002 Kentucky Derby trail, but after a ninth in the Run for the Roses, he found his true home on turf, ending his career with a brilliant win in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Many of his top runners similarly tilt toward turf. Although his oldest daughters have just turned nine, he already appears as the broodmare sire of Kinglet, a classic winner on synthetic in Dubai, and up-and-coming dirt performer Csaba.
Sunshine Song is herself a half-sister to C. S. Silk; Remember the Sheikh, winner of the 2000 El Camino Real Derby on dirt; and multiple stakes-winning sprinter Memory Tap. Also close-up in the family is the prolific stakes winner Victorina, effective from sprints up to 1 1/16 miles.
