Jeff Mullins

Born in Murray, Utah, Jeff Mullins is a lifelong horseman. He galloped horses when he was eight years old, and as a teenager, rode at bush tracks in his home state and in Wyoming. Mullins started training at 17, supervising a string at Les Bois Park in Idaho, although the horses actually ran in his father's name. Venturing out on his own, he set up shop at Beulah Park in Ohio, but eventually returned to the West and achieved success at Turf Paradise in Arizona. That led him to move to the Southern California circuit, where he has racked up training titles at each of the major tracks. Five times the leading trainer at Hollywood Park, he has also taken home titles at Del Mar, Santa Anita and Fairplex. Mullins is the only trainer in history to win the Santa Anita Derby (G1) three straight times, courtesy of Buddy Gil (2003), Castledale (Ire) (2004) and Buzzards Bay (2005). All three were unplaced in the Kentucky Derby, with Buzzards Bay faring best in fifth. Castledale went on to land the Shoemaker Mile (G1) on turf in 2005. That same season, Captain Squire and Wild Fit also garnered Grade 1 victories for the stable. Mullins' wife, Amy, is very much part of the team, as she serves as his assistant trainer and gallops horses.
