Lines of Battle has a well-balanced pedigree of speed on top and stamina on the bottom.
His sire, War Front, was a classy sprinter who captured the Alfred G. Vanderbilt and placed in such major events as the Forego and Vosburgh.
A son of prepotent sire Danzig, War Front made an immediate impact with his very first crop. His initial runners included the speedy The Factor, 2011 Fountain of Youth hero Soldat, and top-class turf miler Data Link. His second crop featured the well-regarded Declaration of War, who is also trained by Aidan O'Brien. Lines of Battle headlines his third crop, along with Departing.
Lines of Battle is the fourth stakes performer produced by his dam, Black Speck. His accomplished half-siblings all raced in France -- Homebound, winner of the Prix de Sandringham; Battle Paint, runner-up in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere; and stakes victor Blue Exit, who later shipped to California and placed in the Strub at Santa Anita.
Black Speck, herself a winner in France, is an Arch mare. Arch, hero of the 1998 Super Derby, is the sire of Blame, who upset Zenyatta in the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic.
Arch is becoming a first-rate broodmare sire. His daughters have produced champion I'll Have Another, star of last year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness; Uncle Mo, the champion two-year-old colt of 2010; and current Derby hopeful Uncaptured.
Black Speck is a half-sister to the renowned stallion Dynaformer, sire of 2006 Kentucky Derby legend Barbaro.
Black Speck and Dynaformer are both out of the smart racemare Andover Way, queen of the 1982 Top Flight Handicap.
Lines of Battle comes from a deep family that also includes 2005 Suburban winner Offlee Wild, Irish highweight sprinter U S Ranger and 2001 Kentucky Derby romper Monarchos.
