Pedigree

Merit Man's pedigree is heavily speed-oriented, making him a dubious candidate for 1 1/4 miles.

His sire, With Distinction, scored his major win in the 5 1/2-furlong El Conejo. Although the son of Storm Cat also placed in the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio, he spent most of his career in sprints.

With Distinction is siring horses with similar distance limitations, such as Decisive Moment, a multiple stakes winner who was 14th in the 2011 Kentucky Derby.

Merit Man's dam, Precise Strike, was herself a sprinter who never won past seven furlongs.

Precise Strike is by the sprinter/miler Precise End, winner of the 2000 Bay Shore and runner-up in the Withers.
