Hall of Fame conditioner Bob Baffert won the Kentucky Derby back-to-back in 1997 and 1998 with Silver Charm and Real Quiet, and again in 2002 with War Emblem. He has saddled 24 horses in the Run for the Roses through 2014. The silver-haired trainer has also captured the Preakness Stakes a record-tying five times and earned the Eclipse Award for outstanding trainer three times. Baffert has saddled two Kentucky Oaks winners, Silverbulletday and Plum Pretty. In total, he has sent out the winners of nine Triple Crown races and 10 Breeders’ Cup events.
Tanma Corp President Susan Chu and three time Derby winning Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert return for a second year with high hope for Chitu following Tanma 2013 Derby contender Super Ninety Nine. Susan Chu and her family fell in love with horse racing after watching Super Saver and I'll Have Another while attending their respective Kentucky Derbies, she decided to enter the horse racing world. Susan is involved in international show jumping and partners with top equestrian professionals including World #1 Show Jumping Champion and 2008 Olympic gold medal winner Eric Lamaze, Canadian Olympian Yann Candele and Gran Prix rider Cory Hardy. A vocal advocate for humane treatment, Susan supports Olympic Equestrian programs and works with the Chinese Taipei Equestrian Association in a consultant capacity on their equestrian programs; she also supports equine rescue projects. She is a member of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation and the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA)
Pulpit--Exogenetic, by Unbridled's Song
Super Ninety Nine's pedigree leaves some questions about his effectiveness at 1 1/4 miles.
He is by the recently-deceased Pulpit, the winner of the 1997 Fountain of Youth and Blue Grass who finished fourth in that year's Kentucky Derby. A prominent sire, Pulpit was responsible for 2010 Florida Derby hero and Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box; top dirt milers Corinthian and Purge; turf millionaire Rutherienne; and outstanding young sire Tapit.
Super Ninety Nine's maternal side isn't likely to add much further stamina to the mix. He is a half-brother to five-time stakes winner Elusive Horizon, who won at distances from five furlongs to 1 1/8 miles.
Their dam, the unraced Exogenetic, is a three-quarter sister to Exogenous, winner of a pair of prestigious 1 1/8-mile events in the 2001 Gazelle and Beldame. Exogenous was a well-beaten second in her only two attempts beyond that trip, however, in the 1 1/4-mile Alabama and the 1 1/2-mile Coaching Club American Oaks.
Exogenous was by the stamina influence Unbridled, but her close relation Exogenetic is by Unbridled's speedier son Unbridled's Song.
Unbridled's Song, hero of the 1996 Florida Derby and Wood Memorial, wound up fifth in that year's Kentucky Derby. A top-quality sire responsible for champions Midshipman and Embur's Song, he is emerging as a broodmare sire as well. Daughters of Unbridled's Song have produced up-and-coming turf star Unbridled Command and former Derby trail veterans General Quarters and Hold Me Back.
Super Ninety Nine's granddam is the six-furlong specialist Tangled Up in Blue, a daughter of speed merchant Phone Trick. Tangled Up in Blue is a half-sister to stakes-winning sprinters Count on a Change and T. V. Countess, the dam of 1997 champion two-year-old filly Countess Diana.
This family has also produced Japanese classic performer Win Variation and, further back, two-time Horse of the Year Curlin. Both had received stamina boosts elsewhere in their pedigrees, however.
