Trainer

Pletcher won the 2010 Kentucky Derby with Super Saver and trained Rags to Riches to win the Kentucky Oaks in 2007 and Princess of Sylmar for win the 2013 Kentucky Oaks. He won four straight Eclipse Awards as top trainer from 2004-2007 and again in 2010. He has trained multiple Eclipse champions including Uncle Mo, Ashado, English Channel, Speighstown, Fleet Indian, Wait a While, Lawyer Ron, and Left Bank.

Born in South Louisiana, Borel knew from a very early age he wanted to become a jockey. He won his first career Kentucky Derby in 2007 on Street Sense, and followed that up two years later with a rail skimming ride on longshot Mine That Bird, and won his third Kentucky Derby in 2010 aboard Super Saver. Borel also won the 2009 Kentucky Oaks and Preakness Stakes aboard Rachel Alexandra. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.

In 2010, WinStar experienced its first victory in the Kentucky Derby with Super Saver. That same year Drosselmeyer, was the surprise winner of the Belmont Stakes and would go on to capture the Breeders Cup Classic in 2011. Their first Derby starter came in 2006 with a second place finish by Bluegrass Cat. In 2008 both Colonel John and Court Vision made a Run for the Roses, as did Mr. Hot Stuff in 2009. They were represented in 2009 as well with homebred Well Armed winning the $6 million Dubai World Cup, the world's richest race. Bill Casner (founded Excel Communications) and Kenny Troutt (developed B&R Equipment) partnered in early 2000 and bought the 1,450-acre Prestonwood Farm property near Versailles, Kentucky, and named it WinStar. Bill Casner stepped down from his role and Mr. Troutt now remains as the owner of WinStar LLC. WinStar Farm is a state-of-the-art farm, with features such as a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, a newly renovated stallion complex, a training barn, and a research lab. WinStar’s breeding operation includes top stallions Tiznow, Distorted Humor, and Speightstown. Elliott Walden, former trainer, serves as the racing manger for WinStar Farm, who employs a variety of different trainers across the United States including: Todd Pletcher, Eoin Harty, Shannon Ritter, Bill Mott, and Kellyn Gorder. The Troutt family resides in Dallas, Texas.

  • Supercharger’s sire is Horse of the Year and Belmont S. (G1) winner A.P. Indy
  • Daughters of A.P. Indy have also produced the likes of Grade 1 winners Mr. Sidney, the aforementioned Wait a While and Any Given Saturday
  • Super Saver should have no problem with staying the distance in the Derby

Los Alamitos Futurity Added to 2014-15 'Road to the Kentucky Derby' Series

The $500,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (Grade I) has been added to the list of races that comprise the 2014-15 “Road to the Kentucky Derby.” The series of 35 select races – 19 “Prep Season” races and 16 “Championship Series” races – will determine which horses qualify to the 141st running of the $2 million guaranteed Kentucky Derby.
