Storming Saint awarded Borderland Derby victory

Lathrop G. Hoffman's STORMING SAINT (Sweetsouthernsaint) was awarded the victory in Saturday night's $100,000 Borderland Derby at Sunland Park despite finishing a neck back in second to Raise the Bridle (Spanish Steps), who drifted out under a left whip at the head of the stretch.

Raise the Bridle bumped hard with Storming Saint, continued to drift out and jostle his rival throughout the lane, and narrowly prevailed to finish 1 1/16 miles on the fast dirt in 1:45 1/5. Luis Contreras aboard Storming Saint immediately lodged an objection and the stewards put up the inquiry sign, eventually disqualifying Raise the Bridle to second for interference and elevating Storming Saint to first.

This first stakes win pushed the Henry Dominguez trainee's earnings to $91,770 and his record now reads 5-2-1-1. Placed in last year's Smarty Jones S. and Riley Allison Futurity, Storming Saint broke his maiden by 13 lengths at Zia Park.
