Mott's Flashy Gray, Unbeaten Unlimited Budget Top Opening Day of Oaks Futures

| Churchill Downs | 03/02/2013 #

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott does not have a victory in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) among his vast collection of wins at Churchill Downs, but his impressive Flashy Gray (#9) is the early people’s choice to win America’s premiere race for 3-year-old fillies following the opening day of betting in the 2013 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (“KOFW”).

The daughter of Flashy Bull, a winner of two of three career starts for Churchill Downs’ all-time leading trainer, was the surprising 5-1 betting choice among 24 wagering interests following the first of three days of Kentucky Oaks Future wagering.  One of four Mott-trained fillies in the pool, Flashy Gray had been listed as a 15-1 risk by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia in his morning line odds for the KOFW pool.

Close behind Flashy Gray at 6-1 was the more experienced Unlimited Budget, (#23), a Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of 2007 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (GI) winner Street Sense who ran her victory string to three with an easy victory in last week’s Rachel Alexandra (GIII) at Fair Grounds. Pletcher has a pair of victories in the Kentucky Oaks to his credit.

Unlimited Budget was followed on the odds board by the Mutuel Field (#24), which features all 3-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual horses on the KOFW betting roster.  The “All Others” bet stood at 7-1 when opening day wagering concluded late Friday evening.

The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager offers racing fans an opportunity to bet on potential contenders for America’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies well in advance of the race at odds that could be significantly more attractive than that that will be available in Kentucky Oaks Day wagering.

The $1 million Kentucky Oaks will be run for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 4, the eve of the Kentucky Derby.  The Kentucky Oaks will be televised live from 5-6 p.m. on the NBC Sports Network.

Like its companion Kentucky Derby Future Wager, the Oaks Future pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, which is available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, but betting on an individual filly will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Oaks.

Fans wagered $15,066 on the first of three days of betting in the Kentucky Oaks Future Pool at racetracks and off-track betting centers across North America and online at TwinSpires.com and other internet wagering platforms.  The Friday total included $3,868 in exacta bets.

Wagering is scheduled to resume on Saturday at noon (all times Eastern).  The pool will close on Sunday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m., 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

Other Kentucky Oaks candidates who received strong backing the during the future pool’s opening day were led by  Pure Fun (#15, 8-1), the Ken McPeek-trained winner of the Hollywood Starlet (GI), and a group of stars at 10-1 that included reigning 2-year-old filly champion and Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) winner Beholder (#1); Emollient (#6), the Mott-trained runner-up in the Demoiselle (GII); and Midnight Lucky, an impressive winner in her lone start for two-time Kentucky Oaks-winning trainer Bob BaffertDreaming of Julia (#5), the Pletcher-trained winner of the Frizette (GI) and runner-up to Live Lively (#10, 25-1) in last week’s Davona Dale (GII) at Gulfstream Park, was next on the odds board at 16-1.
