Larry Jones trained 2011 Horse of the Year Havre De Grace who defeated the males in the G-1 Woodward Stakes. A native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, he has had success in the Kentucky Oaks with victories by Believe You Can in 2012 and Proud Spell in 2008. Jones just missed winning the Kentucky Derby in back-to-back years as Hard Spun and Eight Belles both ran second in 2007 and 2008. Jones has also trained top horses Friesan Fire, Island Sand, Old Fashioned, Mr. Bowling, Joyful Victory, and Mark Valeski.
Curlin--Gasia, by Silver Deputy
Blue Violet is by dual Horse of the Year Curlin out of the multiple stakes-winning Silver Deputy mare Gasia.
In addition to being named Horse of the Year for 2007-08, Curlin earned $10 million while capturing such prestigious races as the Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2007, and the 2008 Group 1 Dubai World Cup while on track.
Blue Violet is from her sire’s first crop to race and joins the likes of Kentucky Derby contender Palace Malice and fellow Kentucky Oaks hopeful Liberated.
Blue Violet is keeping it in the family as a daughter of Gasia. Like her dam, she is trained by Larry Jones for owner Susan Knoll.
Gasia managed to score in a trio of stakes for those connections and also placed in the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks and Grade 1 Monmouth BC Oaks.
Blue Violet’s third dam produced Grade 3 winner Shoal Creek.
