Dale Romans grew up on the Churchill Downs backstretch learning his trade from longtime trainer and father Jerry Romans. The Louisville, Ky native just missed winning the 2010 Kentucky Derby when Paddy O’ Prado finished a game third. Dullahan was a fast closing third in Kentucky Derby 138 and would follow that up with a win in the G-1 Pacific Classic. In 2011 he won his first Classic race when Shackleford captured The Preakness Stakes. He saddled Court Vision to an upset win in the Breeders Cup Turf Mile in 2011 and captured the Breeders Futurity with Dullahan. 2012 was a banner year for the Romans stable with wins by Shackleford in the G-1 Met Mile and G-1 Clark Handicap and Little Mike's gallant victories in the G-1 Woodford Reserve, Arlington Million and Breeders' Cup Turf. His other top runners include O'Prado Again, Sassy Image, First Dude, Kitten’s Joy, Tapitsfly, and Roses in May.

A.P. Indy--Winner, by Horse Chestnut
Private Ensign is by Horse of the Year A.P. Indy out of the winning Horse Chestnut mare Winner.
A.P. Indy suffered just three losses during his 11-race career, and along the way captured the Belmont Stakes and BC Classic.
The highly successful stallion has many top notch offspring, but a few of his more prominent fillies include champion Rags to Riches, who triumphed in both the Kentucky Oaks and Belmont Stakes in 2009; BC Juvenile Fillies champion Tempera; multiple Grade 1 queen Music Note; and 2000 Kentucky Oaks victress Secret Status.
Private Ensign’s female line is bursting with stars as well. The chestnut filly’s dam is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Animal Spirits and the dam of Grade 2 victor Interactif.
Most notably, her third dam is champion and Broodmare of the Year Personal Ensign, who captured the BC Distaff and beat the boys in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap in 1988.
Personal Ensign would find even more success off track, foaling Grade 1 winners My Flag, Miner’s Mark and Traditionally. My Flag is herself the dam of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies champion Storm Flag Flying while Miner’s Mark and Traditionally have gone on to careers at stud.
Private Ensign’s fourth dam is the Hoist the Flag mare Grecian Banner, who was also honored as Broodmare of the Year after producing both Personal Ensign and her full brother multiple Grade 1 winner Personal Flag.
Her fifth dam is dual Argentinian champion *Dorine.
