Mark became involved in racing through his father, Norman, a veteran owner, trainer and breeder for over 40 years, and the former chairman of the Ocala Breeders Sales. At age 12 he rode in a horse van with his father to witness Secreatriat capture the 1973 Kentucky Derby and he was hooked from that moment. He took out his trainer's license at age 18 and won his first race in 1979 at Keeneland. Casse has won the Sovereign Award as Canada's top trainer in a record setting three years in a row 2006-2008.
Gary Barber & Stoneway Farm LLC
Gary Barber has been involved in horse ownership in the states and internationally for over 15 years. He is a Hollywood movie mogul, the CEO and co founder of Spyglass Entertainment which has produced such top films as Seabiscuit, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Insider and The Sixth Sense. In partnership he has raced Grade 1 winners, The Deputy, Gitano Hernando, and Becrux. In 1982 he won an all expense paid trip to the Arlington Million from his native South Africa by winning a handicapping contest.
Spring Venture, yet another daughter of Spring at Last, has only ever run on synthetic or turf tracks in her career. She traveled from Woodbine to Santa Anita to try the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf, and suffered her first loss last November when off-the-board in the one-mile contest.
Despite that, Spring Venture is considered Spring at Last’s second best offspring behind Spring in the Air based on purse money earned in a pair of graded contests in Canada.
Spring Venture’s dam, the Grade 3-placed Rahy mare Zahwah, is herself a daughter of Grade 2 vixen Funistrada.
Zahwah counts among her half-siblings Grade 2 winner Krisada and Grade 2-placed stakes victor Conte Di Savoya as well as the dam of Grade 3 stars Rahystrada and Lone Star Sky.
Spring Venture’s female line is also responsible for 1985 champion turf horse Cozeene, who captured that year’s BC Mile and set or equaled numerous course records while on track.
