Bret launched his training career in 1993 at Louisiana Downs with horses bred by his father Buddy Calhoun. In 2003 he made the national spotlight with the undefeated two year old Cactus Ridge owned by country music start Toby Keith. Bret won two Breeder's Cup races at Churchill Downs on 2010 with Dubai Majesty and fan favorite Chamberlain Bridge who he claimed for $35,000. Bret has several racing operations at tracks from the southeast, midwest to the east coast and is well known for his developement of young horses as well as improvement of racing stock that he claims. Other notable horses trained by Calhoun inlcude King of Speed, Mr. Nightlinger, Jody Slew and Gran Lioness.
Estate of Clarence Scharbauer, Jr.
Clarence Scharbauer, Jr. of Texas passed in February 2014. Scharbauer had a passion for horses, cattle ranching, and his hometown, Midland, Texas, where he was a philanthropist and championship horseman. Sharbauer owned the 1987 Kentucky Derby winner, Alysheba. He was also a member of the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame (inducted in 2001) and the 2007 Lifetime Achievement winner of the Texas Thoroughbred Association.
My Golden Song--Hadif Cat, by Hadif
Fiftyshadesofgold is one of her sire’s, Grade 3-placed My Golden Song, best progeny to date.
The gray stallion competed just six times on track, going undefeated as a juvenile in 2005 and placing in the Holy Bull and Aventura as a three-year-old at Gulfstream Park.
My Golden Song entered stud in 2008 and became Texas’ leading freshman sire of 2011 with his first crop. In addition to Fiftyshadesofgold the stallion’s progeny includes Triumph and Song, a three-time stakes winner thus far this season.
Fiftyshadesofgold’s dam is the winning Hadif mare Hadif Cat, who has also produced stakes-scoring full siblings Sword Trick and Tastefullyxcessive.
Fiftyshadesofgold’s immediate female family is Texas-based but her third dam is Grade 2-placed Alysbelle, better known as a full sister to Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby king Alysheba, who found success in the stallion shed as well.
