Wertheimer and Frere
Owned by brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer. The brothers are part of the French family that owns the national recognized Chanel perfume business that also sells clothing and accessories. Family began in horse racing starting off with Grandfather Pierre. In 1956 he would take his first English classic of many for the family by winning the Epsom Derby with Lavadin. Alain and Gerard’s father Jacques would take over the racing business in 1975 and went on to be named leading owner in France for that same year. The family’s silks have been carried to victory in the Breeders’ Cup four times. 2008 and 2009 saw Goldikova win the Mile, in 2003 Halfbridled won the Juvenile Fillies, and Kotashaan in 1993 won the Breeders’ Cup Turf. In Tune is by multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Unbridled’s Song out of the winning Affirmed mare Wichitoz.
Unbridled’s Song, who passed away last year, is in the top 10 on the leading sire list. Will Take Charge became his most prominent offspring after being honored as champion three-year-old male for 2013 following five wins, including the Travers, and a close head second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Other Unbridled’s Song offspring include champion Midshipman; Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic/Distaff queens Unrivaled Belle and Unbridled Elaine; dual Grade 1 heroine Octave, who ran second in the 2007 Kentucky Oaks; and Grade 2 victress Eight Belles, who broke down after finishing second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby.
Wichitoz never succeeded in two tries against stakes company while on track, but her progeny have more than made up for that. In addition to In Tune, the mare is responsible for Grade 3-placed stakes victor Chitoz and In Tune’s full brother Affirmatif, also a Grade 3-placed stakes scorer.
Wichitoz is herself a half-sister to champion sprinter Rubiano; stakes diva Tap Your Heels, who foaled leading sire Tapit; and Hong Kong Jade, the grandam of champion and Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird.
In Tune’s star-studded female family also includes dual Grade 3-scoring sire Relaunch and multiple stakes-winning stallion Glitterman.
