Golden Springs a surprise in Island Fashion

Considering that Donna Eaton's GOLDEN SPRINGS (Pomeroy) had dropped her last eight since breaking her maiden for a $25,000 tag, she was ignored as the longest shot on the board at 42-1 in Sunday's $50,000 Island Fashion S. at Sunland Park. But the stretch-out to two turns produced a massive turnaround in form for the Joyce Salisbury trainee, who upset this prep for the March 27 Sunland Park Oaks and furnished an $86.40 win payout.

After vying for the early lead, the Florida-bred drifted out into the stretch and found herself two lengths behind the pacesetting Icelain Diva (El Corredor) at the eighth-pole. Yet Golden Springs launched a renewed challenge under a drive by rider Kelsi Purcell, overtook Icelain Diva, and just lasted by a diminishing nose from the rallying Formal Plan (Formal Gold). The final time for the mile on a fast track was 1:41 1/5.

Golden Springs was initially trained by Steve Asmussen, for whom she earned her maiden claiming victory at Lone Star Park on June 6. The dark bay then joined Salisbury, with her best result being a runner-up effort in claiming company last December. With this stakes score to her credit, Golden Springs sports a mark of 10-2-1-1, $43,842.
