Seaneen Girl, Gal About Town face off in Silverbulletday

While the boys begin their Kentucky Derby quest in Fair Grounds' Grade 3 Lecomte on Saturday, the fillies will start their journey toward the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks in the $125,000 Silverbulletday. The mile-and-70-yard contest will feature a rematch between Seaneen Girl and Gal About Town, the respective top two from the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs last November.

Neither filly has competed since the Golden Rod, where Seaneen Girl drew even with Gal About Town and eventually passed her to score by a half-length. Prior to that dirt debut, the chestnut daughter of Spring at Last had only ever competed on Woodbine's synthetic Polytrack.

The Bernie Flint trainee was second in the Grade 3 Mazarine at the Toronto track off a pair of claiming runs, and was the 31-1 longest shot on the board for the Golden Rod in her next start. Seaneen Girl will need to duplicate that performance if she hopes to silence any naysayers.

Gal About Town was the near 5-2 favorite in the Golden Rod after running second in the Grade 2 Pocahontas one month prior. Though she wasn't able to hold off Seaneen Girl, the City Zip miss will likely garner the betting public's favor once again Saturday as she make her Fair Grounds debut for trainer Bret Calhoun.

Touch Magic could provide an upset of her own in the Silverbulletday if the top aforementioned pair get caught up in a speed duel. The Lion Heart filly is no stranger to coming from off the pace, a move that almost netted her the Grade 3 Delta Downs Princess on November 17. Touch Magic was just caught by a half-length on the wire of that one-mile affair and could be overlooked Saturday despite having James Graham in the saddle.

Finding More will need to do just that if she hopes to leave her mark on the Silverbulletday. The Kellyn Gorder-trained daughter of Trickey Trevor led nearly every step of the way to take the Letellier Memorial on December 22, but that was only going six furlongs. She did draw off from the re-opposing Irish Lute and Brotherhood Singer in the lane, though, so she could draw some interest under John Jacinto.

The 11-strong Silverbulletday field also includes Ciao Bella Luna, who will be stretching out here off a game second in the Golden Gate Debutante on December 1. Estonia has a shot as well, having recorded a three-length victory over track and distance on the same day.

Afrodita and maiden winners Estonia, Flashy Campaign and Smitten complete the Silverbulletday field.
