Beholder, Fiftyshadesofhay work for Las Virgenes
Eclipse Award winner Beholder worked five furlongs on Santa Anita's fast main track Sunday in :59 3/5 under regular rider Garrett Gomez.
"Beautiful," Richard Mandella said of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner's work in preparation for Saturday's Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes at one mile.
Beholder was upset by 20-1 shot Renee's Titan in the Grade 2, 6 1/2-furlong Santa Ynez Stakes on January 21, losing by three-quarters of a length in her three-year-old debut, and the Henny Hughes filly will get a rematch on Saturday.
With Rafael Bejarano in the saddle, Fiftyshadesofhay also worked Sunday for the Las Virgenes, going five furlongs in company with Brannaman in :59 2/5 for Bob Baffert. Brannaman, a four-year-old colt who is still a maiden, was clocked in 1:00.
"She's Kentucky Oaks material," Baffert said of his Pulpit filly, who won the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel on a wet-fast track by nearly six lengths under Bejarano, who has ridden her in each of her six starts.
Grade 3-placed Speedinthruthecity, a daughter of City Zip and also probable for the Las Virgenes, toured a half-mile Sunday in :49 3/5.
