Survivorship: Since May 01, 1998

In 1996 my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and that was something she thought
could never happen. Luckily she survived her journey and won her fight and has been able to
stay with me and my family. Watching my mom go through what she did was not easy for me. It
made an unforgettable memory and a hard lesson that I will never forget.
As I take a trip back through memory lane, when I found out my mother was diagnosed
with cancer, I remember not knowing what would happen. It was like she just got sick or something. As time went by I began to understand the illness and the more I understood it the more it hurt me inside. I was always there for her and I would perform any duties that needed to be done to help her.
She has been cancer free now for almost 12 years. My children ages 11 and 13 have enjoyed their grandma and all of her splendor and I can’t imagine life without her. Dad passed away last May from cancer. Both of my parents were avid horseracing fans and attended Saratoga in the summer. Together we dabbled in the owning of race horses during the late 80’s. Mom is now 75 and I’m sure a trip to historic Churchill Downs would be a special joy for her.
