Survivorship: Since May 22, 2002

My mother is my hero. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2002. She indured chemotherapy and radiation, but even on her worst days she still tried to be a mother to myself and my younger brother. She was only 39 when she was diagnosed and had no family history. Thankfully, the lymph nodes were clear of cancer. Initially, she didn't want to undergo the chemo b/c she didn't want to be sick. We all sat down and had a family meeting, her, myself, my brother and my dad, and we all told her that we wanted her to do it because it would better her chances of survival. She debated for a few days then said she decided that losing her hair and being sick was worth it if it meant she would be her family even longer. Today, she is healthy and cancer-free and the bravest woman I know. She stared cancer square in the face and didn't give up. She wouldn't go down without a fight. Now we continue to fight every year, in our local Relay for Life and we purchase a lot of products that donate proceeds to breast cancer awareness and research. She has always put our family's needs above her own, and I would love to give her this awesome day at the races!
