Angela Sherman of Simpsonville, Kentucky
Vote counts are not immediately updated. Rest assured that every vote counts, but they don't all appear on the web site immediately.
I would like to nominate my sister, Angela Sherman, for the Survivors parade, although technically she is not a survivor yet. She has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and is scheduled to have a double mastectomy on March 22nd.
Angela is a wife, mother, schoolteacher and a jazzercise instructor who is always on the go. She has a ten year old son and five year old twins (a boy and girl). Her husband works hard in a family owned business.
Needless to say this has been a blow to the entire family. Since she was diagnosed, she has experienced a full range of emotions; anger, sadness, guilt and just being terrified of the unknown. But now she is focused and ready to start her fight to beat this disease.
Normally Angela and Rob host a Derby party for family and friends, and are unable to attend The Oaks because of all the work involved with hosting the party. This year they decided to cancel the party and focus on Angela's health. I have attended The Oaks since I was a teenager and I told her she should plan on going with us this year. Then I received an email from Churchill Downs reminding people of the deadline to nominate survivors.
Angela will be recovered from her surgery by Oaks day and the Survivors parade would be a chance for her to be around a large group of inspirational survivors before she has to start her treatments. This would be a very positive and helpful experience for her and I hope she gets the chance to participate.
Whether she is selected or not we will be at Churchill Downs on Oaks Day, wearing pink and cheering for all the survivors there.
Thanks for your consideration.
