Euphrosyne awarded Honeybee win via disqualification

Euphrosyne finished second in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Honeybee at Oaklawn Park, but was presented with the win following the disqualification of Sugar Shock by the stewards. Sent off the 8-1 fourth choice, the bay daughter of Harlan's Holiday paid $19.20 with jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. in the irons.

Sugar Shock tracked Taris on the Tampa Bay Downs backstretch as the 9-5 favorite set fractions of splits of :23, :47 and 1:12. The swift pace took its toll on Taris, though, and the unbeaten lass faded in the stretch.

Sugar Shock inherited the lead but found plenty of challenges coming her way. Euphrosyne was closing on the outside after biding her time in the second flight with Silk Purse while near 5-2 second pick Please Explain was winding her way through traffic from last. Sugar Shock kept motoring under jockey Channing Hill but suddenly lugged to the outside, right into the path of Euphrosyne who was forced to take up abruptly. Please Explain found her way blocked for an instant as well before Hill managed to wrestle his mount back into a straight path, but the damage had already been done.

Sugar Shock kept her neck in front of the re-rallying Euphrosyne on the wire, with Please Explain finishing another three-quarters of a length back in third in a final time of 1:45 3/5 for 1 1/16 miles over the fast dirt.

Santana was quick to claim foul against Hill and Sugar Shock, as was Please Explain's rider, Drayden Van Dyke. While the stewards allowed Santana's claim they disallowed Van Dyke's and only placed Sugar Shock behind Euphrosyne, leaving Please Explain in third.

The revised order of finish became Euphrosyne, Sugar Shock and Please Explain, with Kiss Moon rounding out the top four. Courageous Julie, Taris, Springsteen Road, Ireland, Dream Spinner, Silk Purse and Midnight Eclipse completed the order under the wire.

Euphrosyne was making just her second stakes try in this spot following a runner-up effort in the February 1 Martha Washington at Oaklawn Park. Prior to that the Steve Asmussen trainee broke her maiden by 6 3/4 lengths in her fourth career try. Her other three races all resulted in runner-up efforts, including her career debut for trainer Eddie Kenneally before being transferred to Asmussen.

Euphrosyne earned 50 points to add to the four she received for her Martha Washington second towards a starting berth in the Kentucky Oaks.

Campaigned by Gillian S. Campbell, Ralph & Shelly Stayer, Dan Clark and Greg Skoda, Euphrosyne more than doubled her career earnings in this spot and improved her mark to read 6-2-4-0. The bay filly passed through the sales ring twice, RNAing each time when attracting a bid of $47,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and $185,00 as a Keeneland April two-year-old.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Euphrosyne is the first registered foal out of the stakes-winning Doneraile Court mare Three Graces, who is a half-sister to Grade 2 hero Private Horde and dual Grade 3-placed Pricearose. Euphrosyne's third dam is Grade 1 victress Golden Horde.
