Chef Jean-Robert de Cavel
Jean-Robert is from Roubaix, France, and began his culinary career working with such luminaries as Chef Joe Rostang at the legendary La Bonne Auberge on the French Riviera. The Rostang family sent him to the luxurious Mallihouana Hotel on Anguilla in the Caribbean and to the Hotel Plaza Athenee in New York where he became executive Chef. In 1993 Jean-Robert moved to the Mobil 5 Star Maisonette in Cincinnati. His energy and enthusiasm for his art are boundless; between 2002 and 2008, Jean-Robert was the founding partner and creative force behind Jean-Robert at Pigall, JeanRo Bistro, Pho Paris, Greenup Café and Lavomatic Café. Jean-Robert at Pigall earned 4 Mobil Stars and became only one of 19 North American establishments recognized by the prestigious Relais and Chateaux group. Jean-Robert is a 3 time finalist for Best Chef Midwest from the James Beard Foundation, is a Master Chef by Maitres Cuisiners de France and received the Medal of the Chevalier de l’ordre du Merite agricole. Jean-Robert has been awarded Person of the Year from both Cincinnati CityBeat and the French American Chamber of Commerce.
In 2008 Jean-Robert became chef-in-residence at the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State. He continues that role working with culinary students and faculty and bringing his world-class experience and perspective to programs and events. In 2010 he opened Jean-Robert’s Table and in the fall of 2013 the French Crust Café with pastry Chef and friend, Jean –Philip Solnom.
Jean-Robert has been featured in many publications such as Wine Spectator, Bon Appétit, Food Arts, Gourmet, Esquire and Conde Nast Traveler. In 2003, in memory of his daughter Jean-Robert established the de Cavel family SIDS foundation eat.play.give. This is Jean-Robert's first year at a Taste of Derby representing Turfway Park, just across the river from Cincinnati.
