The Fountain of Youth Kentucky Derby prep race will run this Saturday at Gulfstream Park.  Featured here is the Fountain of Youth trophy from the Ben and Jimmy Jones collection  This trainer’s trophy was presented to Horace A. Jimmy Jones when his horse Gen. Duke won the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park in 1957. The following year, Jimmy conditioned Tim Tam who won the Fountain of Youth and went on to capture the Kentucky Derby.

The inaugural running of the Fountain of Youth was held in 1945, and five Thoroughbreds that have won this prep race have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby (Tim Tam, 1958; Kauai King, 1966; Spectacular Bid. 1979; Thunder Gulch, 1995; Orb, 2013). Now held annually, the race is set at 1 1/16 miles for 3-year-olds.  This trophy came to the Kentucky Derby Museum from the estate of Ben and Jimmy Jones.
