Ladies, it is finally time to truly let your inner Southern belle out to play! There are so many ways to dress up for the Run for the Roses, that you will have no excuse to not have fun with it!

This week I will cover a few things that you will want to take into consideration when choosing an outfit for your Derby festivities.

Whether you are inspired at first by a stunning hat, or you see the dress of your dreams right out of the gate, it is best to remember that you will want to wear something that suits your plans for the day. Dresses that are high maintenance or complicated will make it difficult to navigate through the crowds and move freely, which will wear on your patience throughout the day. Jumpsuits have seen a rise in popularity in recent years, and it is easy to see why! They are comfortable, elongating, and help keep you warm on cool Kentucky mornings.

Next, allow yourself to truly embrace the season! Trends may come and go in the fashion world, but vibrant colors and bold prints will always be a staple on Derby Day - so don’t be shy! Express your excitement for the festivities with happy hues! Breathable fabrics such as cotton and seersucker are comfortable if the sun gets warm in the afternoon. vineyard vines, The Official Style of the Kentucky Derby, designs a special line each year full of the most perfect options for the track. One of my favorite features of their dresses and jumpsuits is that so many feature pockets! (They sure come in handy for all of those winning bets!)  Check out the vineyard vines Guide to the 145th Kentucky Derby.

Since the race takes place in early spring, the weather can be a bit unpredictable.  Consider incorporating layers into your look if you will be at the track or an outdoor party, in case we encounter a chilly morning or cold snap. A chic trench coat in a beautiful color or simple cardigan will do wonders to help you stay comfortable throughout the day.

No outfit would be complete without the perfect pair of shoes! Keep in mind that Churchill Downs is a historical property that features stone walkways and areas that can be challenging to navigate in high stilettos. Make sure that the shoes you choose to wear are comfortable for walking distances.  Wedges are a great option if you plan to be on your feet often. Pro Tip: Avoid breaking in a brand new pair of high heels on Derby Day! It is a mistake you will only make once. Take my word for it.

Lastly and most important, be confident and have fun! If you feel amazing, you will look amazing! There are no exceptions to this rule.

Enjoy the day and live in the moment with your family and friends. You are about to witness history in the making!

Stay Inspired!
