LEONARD broke in front. BADEN-BADEN, KING WILLIAM and McWHIRTER followed closely with VERA CRUZ, which broke poorly, trailing the field. LEONARD continued to lead but BADEN-BADEN began to move up on the turn and he caught LEONARD just before turning into the stretch. KING WILLIAM came with a mild rush but he faded near the stretch. VERA CRUZ had the worst of the start and the mere fact that he was able to get fourth reflects credit upon speed of the colt.
