The field was away on the first attempt. DAY STAR was first to take lead, followed closely by McHENRY. HIMYAR, the favorite, was fifth after a quarter. He made a mild bid in the stretch but could not reach DAY STAR who won by a length. LEVELER was two lengths back of HIMYAR and a neck in front of SOLICITOR for third money. McHENRY, a serious challenger for three-quarters, was fifth by a head. BURGUNDY was a disappointment as was EARL OF BEACONSFIELD.
