A Calumet Farm homebred, Happy Jack has put in a couple of nice efforts during the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep races in California for trainer Doug O’Neill. He is by the 2013 Preakness S. (G1) winner Oxbow, sire of 2021 Kentucky Derby runner-up Hot Rod Charlie. His dam Tapitstry is by Tapit, a source of class and stamina, and is a granddaughter of the Grade 3 winner Noble Damsel, whose descendants include Grade 1 winners Noble Bird and Marley’s Freedom, both of whom were best up to a mile. He might well stay 1 1/4 miles if he gets into the Kentucky Derby field but may not have the class.
