The speedy Local Hero found his way onto the Kentucky Derby trail with a solid third in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds. Coming into the race after winning a maiden on the same track by seven lengths, Local Hero led for most of the 1-1/16 mile trip and fought hard in the stretch, giving way only to Girvin and Untrapped.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Local Hero was a $500,000 purchase at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton March 2-year-old sale in Florida. He was bred by Three Chimneys Farm and is raced by e Five Racing Thoroughbreds.
Local Hero is by Hard Spun, a high-quality sire son of Danzig who finished second to Street Sense in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. He has sired a number of horses that have proved capable up to the Derby trip of 1-1/4 miles, such as Wicked Strong and Hard Aces. His dam Liam’s Dream was a grade 3 winner over six furlongs, and her dam Danzig’s Beauty won the grade III Gardenia Stakes over 1-1/16 miles.
On pedigree, Local Hero has a reasonable chance of staying 1-1/4 miles if he makes it to the Kentucky Derby. But his racing style has been that of a tearaway, which raises some questions about his staying ability.
Local Hero was a 72-1 shot when Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Feb. 26. He clearly has speed, and could be a value bet for the Derby if he can learn to rein in his style to let some of the stamina in his pedigree come through.
