Horse Profile - Strike Power
Strike Power won his maiden debut by eight lengths at 12-1 odds on December 23, 2017, and his connections knew he was a gift for the Christmas holiday heading into the New Year as a three-year-old.
Starting again at Gulfstream Park in his stakes debut, Strike Power went wire-to-wire as the 4-5 favorite in the Swale Stakes (G3) on February 3 to win again by nearly three lengths. Trainer Mark Hennig had the chestnut colt ready for his next Kentucky Derby (G1) prep in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, and Strike Power just missed in a stalking trip. He finished second behind wire-to-wire winner Promises Fulfilled but more than two lengths in front of champion Good Magic, who finished third.
Strike Power has earned 20 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby, and ran eighth in the March 31 Florida Derby (G1) in what was likely his last race before the Derby
Strike Power's sire is Speightstown, who never ran a Triple Crown race but won the 2004 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at age six in the final race of his career. There is not much distance pedigree to suggest Strike Power will by a top quality horse at the classic distance of 1 1/4 miles.
