Uncontested Racing News
Based on his outstanding victory in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park Jan. 16, Uncontested should have a great chance in the Kentucky Derby.
Unfortunately, he is among a number of leading contenders to have since run a shocker. Heavily favored in the Southwest Stakes (G3) Feb. 20, Uncontested once again led from Petrov, but this time he had nothing when challenged at the top of the stretch, finally finishing sixth.
Harry Rosenblum, who owns the horse with Robert LaPenta, says the horse is likely to skip the Rebel Stakes March 18 and instead race once more prior to the Kentucky Derby, probably the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn April 15.
Bred by Richard Forbush, Uncontested was a $20,000 purchase at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale. He is by Tiz Wonderful, a winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes whose progeny include juvenile grade I winner Condo Commando. Uncontested is a half-brother to Solitary Ranger, a grade III winner at seven furlongs, and his family has produced June’s Reward, third in the Del Mar Invitational Derby (G2) at 1-1/8 miles. The pedigree doesn’t scream out stamina, and nor does his style of racing on the speed, but it’s not impossible to see him staying 1-1/4 miles.
Trained by Wayne Catalano, Uncontested was a 25-1 chance when Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager ended, but was removed as an individual option after the Southwest Stakes. However, many pundits believe that the Southwest run was an aberration, and he will provide good value to punters if he can return to his Smarty Jones Stakes form.
