Irad Ortiz, Jr.

The Peruto Rican born Ortiz came from a family of jockeys and graduated from Escuela Vocacional Hipica. He moved to New York in 2011, where his grandfather had worked before him. He is the brother of Jose Ortiz. By 2013 he was riding in the Belmont Stakes aboard Incognito, a horse trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. The following season, however, was Ortiz’s best. He would win 15 graded stakes races including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf aboard Lady Eli. He would pilot that same filly to a resounding win at the 2015 Belmont Oaks Invitational. He would also ride Stephanie’s Kitten to a win at the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
