Jose Lezcano

Jose Lezcano was born on April 20, 1985 in Panama. Jose attended the Laffit Pincay Jockey School in his native country of Panama, before moving to the United States in 2003. When Lezcano arrived in the United States, he commenced his U.S. career at Gulfstream Park. 

Jose rode his first winner in 2004 aboard Cloudy Gray. In 2008 Lezcano had his best year to date as he was the leading rider at the Meadowlands Racetrack and that summer knocked off Joe Bravo during the Monmouth Park meet to claim the riding title there as well.

Jose also won his biggest career race in 2008 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf aboard Maram. Lezcano parlayed his 2008 success into 2009 as he won the Gulfstream Park riding title with 71 wins. Jose Lezcano won the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic in 2011 aboard the great mare Royal Delta. In 2013, Lezcano won the Breeders’ Cup Mile aboard Wise Dan as he took over the mount for John Velazquez who was injured and unable to ride.

Other notable horses Lezcano has ridden to victory include Buddy’s Saint, Ice Box, Einstein and Winter Memories. Jose’s best finish in the Kentucky Derby was aboard Ice Box as they finished a fast closing 2nd to Super Saver in 2010. Lezcano was aboard Ice Box when he won the 2010 Florida Derby at 20-1 odds prior to the Kentucky Derby. Jose also has been in the top 10 of national money earners since 2010 through 2016. As of this bio in April 2017; Jose Lezcano has amassed 2,316 career wins.
