The son of a former jockey, Gutierrez began by riding quarter hoses in Veracruz and Mexico City. In 2006, he would move to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada where he began training at Hastings Racecourse. Gutierrez would win the Hastings Park Champion Jockey in 2007 and 2008 and establish himself as an up and comer in the sport. In 2012, he would be paired with I’ll Have Another and the duo would claim victories a the Robert B. Lewis Stakes and Santa Anita Derby in preparation for their Triple Crown push. They would go on to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes together before injuries prevented I’ll Have Another from running at the Belmont Stakes, instead forcing him to retire. Guitierrez will get another shot in 2016 aboard Nyquist, one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby. The two have already won the San Vicente Stakes this season after decimating the field at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2015.
