Dogwood Stable President Cot Campbell has announced that multiple Grade 1-placed AIKENITE (Yes It's True), who faded to eighth in Saturday's Blue Grass S. (G1), will not pursue the May 1 Kentucky Derby (G1).
Following Saturday's Derby preps, the Todd Pletcher colt ranked 24th on the graded earnings list with $221,750, and needed only three defections to get into the 20-horse field.
"Our Kentucky Derby hopeful Aikenite is off the Derby trail," Campbell said on dogwoodstable.com.
"His jockey Garrett Gomez said that Aikenite came up empty when he asked him the question coming into the stretch. It was a very untypical race for our horse, and there doesn't seem to be any reason for it at this point."
After tracking the early pace in the Blue Grass, and working his way into second turning for home, Aikenite weakened in the drive. The bay thus failed to duplicate his only prior effort at Keeneland, a rallying second in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) last fall.
Aikenite's resume also includes third-place finishes in the Hopeful S. (G1) on Labor Day at Saratoga and the February 20 Fountain of Youth S. (G2) last time out at Gulfstream Park. His record stands at 7-1-1-2 with career earnings of $254,750.
