Claiborne Farm and Adele B. Dilschneider's homebred TRUBS (First Samurai) outdueled Divine Music (Songandaprayer) by a hard-fought neck to capture Saturday's $58,200 Black Gold S. at Fair Grounds.
The Al Stall Jr. pupil stalked in fourth, 3 1/2 lengths off the pace through an initial quarter in :22, and moved up to second through a half in :46. Taking the overland route into the stretch, Trubs rallied to the lead, only to face a stiff challenge from the rail-skimming Divine Music.
The pair went eyeball-to-eyeball through the final furlong, but Trubs would not be denied under Jesse Campbell. The top two were clear of the rest, with 8-5 favorite and early leader Changing the Rules (Peace Rules) fading to third.
By negotiating six fast-track furlongs in 1:11 as the 3-1 third choice, Trubs recorded his first stakes win, and improved his record to 7-3-0-0, $99,675.
The dark bay colt, who broke his maiden at Louisiana Downs in his third try and followed up by landing an allowance at Delta Downs, had since finished fourth in the December 11 Springboard Mile at Remington Park and the January 14 Jean Lafitte S. at Delta Downs.
Jean Lafitte winner Decisive Moment (With Distinction) is bound for the February 19 Risen Star S. (G2) at Fair Grounds.
