Rushaway S. winner SWIFT WARRIOR (First Samurai) sustained a lateral, non-displaced condylar fracture of the right front Wednesday morning after a breeze in preparation for Saturday's $750,000 Blue Grass S. (G1) at Keeneland.
"He looked smooth on the track, but when we got back to the barn and unsaddled him, he took a couple of funny steps," trainer John Terranova said. "Then we noticed a little filling around the ankle and took X-rays. He is already on his way to Rood & Riddle (Equine Hospital). We should have a prognosis tonight."
With exercise rider Eliel DeJesus up, Swift Warrior had worked three furlongs in :39 1/5 in company with Uncle Carm (Bluegrass Cat), a maiden.
Swift Warrior had won the Rushaway in his most recent start on March 26 in his initial start for Terranova. The chestnut has a record of 12-3-2-5 with victories coming on dirt, turf and Polytrack. With 12 starts, he would have been the most experienced starter in the Blue Grass field.
"That's the highs and lows of racing," said a philosophical Terranova, who won the first Grade 1 race of the meet last Saturday with Lilacs and Lace (Flower Alley) in the Ashland (G1). "The boys in the barn are pretty shook up about it. It is just unfortunate."
