Jockey Calvin Borel capped a big day at Churchill Downs on Saturday by guiding Stoneway Farm's Exfactor to an emphatic victory in the Grade 3, $111,500 Bashford Manor. The meet's leading race for juveniles, the Bashford Manor was the fifth race won by Borel on the 13-race program.
Taking advantage of a swift pace, and an early misstep by 4-5 favorite Sum of the Parts, Exfactor made a bold move into contention around the far turn and drew off in the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Final time for six furlongs on a fast track was 1:10 1/5. Exfactor paid $12.60, $5.20 and $3.60 as the 5-1 third choice.
Last of seven after Friscan reached the quarter-mile mark in :21 2/5, Exfactor circled the field around the far turn to get within two lengths of that leader after a half-mile in :45 3/5. Friscan was chased in second by Sum of the Parts down the backside, but the heavy favorite broke in the air and endured a wide trip thereafter. Third behind the top pair turning for home, Exfactor finished full of run and was never seriously challenged after taking the lead just over a furlong out. Power World rallied for second, 1 1/4 lengths clear of Friscan.
Sum of the Parts, who had defeated Exfactor by 2 3/4 lengths in their mutual debut on May 14, finished a neck behind Friscan in fourth. He was followed under the wire by Chalybeate Springs, Bonaparte and Hot Speed. Laurie's Rocket, Lil Cherokee, Taarpy's Goal and Green Mouse were scratched.
Following his second-place finish to Sum of the Parts in the aforementioned maiden at Churchill, Exfactor returned on June 9 to break his maiden in wire-to-wire fashion by 4 1/2 lengths going 5 1/2 furlongs. The Bernie Flint trainee has now bankrolled $109,348.
