Ralph M. Evans' Upstart zoomed up on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard Saturday, thanks to a 5 1/2-length conquest of the Holy Bull (G2) at Gulfstream.

Trained by Rick Violette and ridden by Jose Ortiz, the 2-1 shot was forwardly placed early before dominating in the stretch. He took 1:43 3/5 to finish 1 1/16 miles on the fast track and paid $10.80.

Upstart banked 10 points toward the Derby. Added to his previous points from a second in the Champagne (G1) and a third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), he has a total of 16 -- good for third overall on the list at present.

Frosted finished second, doubling his point total to 8. Third-placer Bluegrass Singer got on the board with 2, and fourth-placer Juan and Bina scored 1.
