Gulfstream Park played host to last week’s lone scoring race, the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G2) on January 24, and Upstart proved to be a smashing winner, romping home to a 5 ½-length decision in the 1 1/16-mile contest.
With the 10-point winner’s share, Upstart moved to third on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 16 points.
The Kentucky Derby is limited to 20 three-year-old Thoroughbreds and a points system determines eligibility. We are currently in the Prep Season portion of the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” series, awarding points on a 10-4-2-1 basis.
The complete schedule and explanation of scoring races, along with the updated standings of the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard, can be found here.
Upstart also earned four points for finishing second in the Champagne Stakes (G1) last October and two points for a third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).
Holy Bull runner-up Frosted, who also finished second in the Remsen Stakes (G2) in late November, moved to 15th on the Leaderboard with a total of eight points. Bluegrass Singer joined the Leaderboard, picking up two points for his third in the Holy Bull, and Juan and Bina earned his first point finishing fourth.
